RSA Design Awards: Zero app proposal

Zero is a collaborative project done for RSA design competition.

Circular futures brief:

In the pervasive linear economic model, raw material resources are converted into usable products by manufacturers and after use are disposed of by consumers as rubbish. This is fundamentally a wasteful and unsustainable model given the finite resources of the planet and increasing rates of consumption by a growing population; the middle class population of developing countries is predicted to expand by 3 billion people over the next 20 years.
Simply using less will not be sufficient.

Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCGs) cover a wide variety of products such as food, refreshment, home care and person- al care products; this sector generates approximately 75% of municipal solid waste. This brief therefore asks to rethink the future of how consumer goods are delivered, used and ultimately re-captured so that valuable resources can be retained within a circular economy. We are particularly interested in personal care products, which are generally defined as toiletries for personal hygiene and/or beautification.

In approaching this brief, we were encouraged to think about current trends that have the potential to enable circular
futures such as 3D printing, e-commerce, digital, the Internet of Things. How technology can be used for separating
material at a molecular level for re-cycling, frugal innovation and changing relationships between consumers and retailers.
Our group decided to tackle the empty packaging from beauty products as this market provides the most plastic waste after the products has been used. The Zero app then works in tandem with the Zero bin which will be located in convenient locations such as at bus stop, train stations and HDB void decks. While researching, we noticed that some companies has an incentive system whereby they give incentives to customers who brings back their empty products to the shop for them to recycle it. As such, we decided to make this system convenient by creating an app and bin service so as to make it more convenient for the people and to encourage them to recycle their empty products instead of throwing it away.
The Zero app is made to encourage and motivate users to participate in the efforts to help decrease plastic waste produced and increase the recycling rate of Singapore. It was designed to tackle two practices - recycling and reusing
The Zero app and bin works by using a point system to give incentives to users who recycle empty products from participating brands. When users recycle their empty products with the Zero bin, they will be rewarded certain amount of points, using these points, they can get discounts from the participating brands.
